How Many Weeks in a Year
Last updated: May 31, 2026
Written by Blake Boege
A weeks-in-a-year calculation divides standard calendar year lengths by 7. In a common year (365 days), this results in exactly 52 weeks and 1 day (approximately 52.14 weeks). In a leap year (366 days), it results in 52 weeks and 2 days (approximately 52.29 weeks). Over a standard 4-year leap cycle, the average is 52.178 weeks per year.

How it works
The number of weeks in a year is calculated by dividing the total number of days in the year by 7 (the number of days in a week):
Common Year (365 Days)
365 ÷ 7 = 52.14 weeks (52 weeks + 1 day)
Leap Year (366 Days)
366 ÷ 7 = 52.29 weeks (52 weeks + 2 days)
The Math Behind the Calendar Year
Because 365 is not perfectly divisible by 7, our calendar drifts by one day each year. If a standard year begins on a Monday, it will also end on a Monday. The following year will then begin on a Tuesday.
Leap years, which occur every four years to adjust for the Earth's orbit around the sun taking 365.2422 days, contain 366 days. This adds a two-day drift at the end of the year.

Frequently asked questions
A calendar year has 365 days. If you divide 365 by 7 (the days in a week), you get 52 with a remainder of 1 day (52.1428 weeks). This extra day is why standard years start and end on the same day of the week.
A leap year has 366 days. Dividing 366 by 7 gives 52 weeks and 2 days (52.2857 weeks). Therefore, a leap year starts on one day of the week and ends on the next day.
Assuming a standard 5-day work week and 52 weeks, there are 260 working days in a year, which equates to exactly 52 work weeks (minus any public holidays or vacation time).
Accounting for the leap year cycle (which adds one day every 4 years), the average length of a year is 365.2425 days. Dividing this by 7 yields an average of approximately 52.1775 weeks per year.
