A birthday calculator finds the next anniversary of a date of birth and counts the calendar days remaining until it. It also reports the age reached on that date, the current completed age, and the decimal age, which is the completed years plus the share of the current birthday year that has already passed. Anniversaries of 29 February are clamped to 28 February in a common year, the same convention the age calculator uses.

How it works

Your birthday is the anniversary of your date of birth, so the calculator advances your birth date a whole number of years and finds the first anniversary that falls on or after the date you are asking about. The countdown is then a plain difference between two calendar dates.

next birthday = birth + n years, smallest n where the result ≥ today
days left = next birthday − today
decimal age = completed years + days since last birthday ÷ days in this birthday year

The decimal age denominator is the span between your own two birthdays, which is 365 or 366 days depending on whether a leap day falls inside it. Dividing by 365 or by 365.25 would give a number that drifts and never lands exactly on a whole age on the day you actually have a birthday.

All of the date arithmetic comes from the same civil-date engine the age calculator uses. Dates are counted as integer day numbers rather than by subtracting timestamps, so the totals do not shift with time zones or daylight saving.

How 29 February is handled

A leap day birthday has no exact anniversary in three years out of four. This calculator clamps it to 28 February in a common year and keeps 29 February in a leap year, which is the convention used everywhere on this site. Someone born on 29 February 2000 therefore has birthdays on 28 February 2027, 29 February 2028 and 28 February 2029.

The same rule drives the countdown, the decimal age, the progress figure, the table of upcoming birthdays, the birthday-in-a-year lookup and the half birthday, so no two of them can disagree. Treat it as this calculator’s stated convention rather than a universal legal rule: jurisdictions differ on when a leap day birthday counts for a legal threshold, and if a deadline turns on it you should check the rule that applies to you.

Every figure below is computed by the calculator on this page. The reference dates are fixed rather than written as “today”, so the numbers stay correct as time passes.

An ordinary birthday

Date of birth 20 June 2000, working it out on 14 August 2026.

  • The most recent birthday was 20 June 2026, turning 26.
  • The next is Sunday 20 June 2027, 310 days later, which is 44 weeks and 2 days.
  • Age on 14 August 2026 is 26 years, 1 month and 25 days.
  • 55 days have passed out of the 365 calendar days between 20 June 2026 and 20 June 2027, so decimal age is 26 + 55 ÷ 365 = 26.15 and the birthday year is 15.1% gone.
  • The half birthday is Sunday 20 December 2026.

The birthday itself

Date of birth 14 August 2000, working it out on 14 August 2026. The countdown reads 0 days rather than jumping to 2027, the age turned is 26, and decimal age is exactly 26.00 because no part of the new birthday year has elapsed.

A leap-day date of birth

Date of birth 29 February 2000, working it out on 28 February 2026. Under the clamp described above, 28 February is the anniversary in a common year, so this is the birthday: 0 days remaining, turning 26. The following birthdays are 28 February 2027, 29 February 2028 and 28 February 2029.

A month-end date of birth

Date of birth 31 January 2025, working it out on 1 March 2025. The age is 0 years, 1 month and 1 day: one whole month takes 31 January to 28 February, and one further day reaches 1 March. The half birthday is 31 July 2025.

Day and month counts

Date of birth 1 January 1998. This person was 10,000 days old on Monday 19 May 2025 and 1,000 weeks old on Thursday 2 March 2017, both already passed by 2026. Still ahead are 15,000 days old on Wednesday 26 January 2039, 500 months old on Thursday 1 September 2039, 20,000 days old on Friday 4 October 2052 and 25,000 days old on Sunday 13 June 2066. Each day figure is that many calendar days after the date of birth, so it does not depend on whether you would count the day of birth itself as day one.

Working it out by hand

  1. Write your birth date with the current year in place of your birth year.
  2. If that date has not arrived yet, it is your next birthday, and the age you turn is the current year minus your birth year. If it has already gone by, use next year instead and add one to that age.
  3. For the days remaining, add up three things: the days left in the current month, then the real length of every whole month in between, then the day of the month your birthday falls on. Use each month’s actual length, 28 to 31 days, with 29 for February in a leap year. Knowing how many whole months are involved is not enough on its own, because those months are not the same length, and treating each as 30 days will be out by several days across a year.
  4. For decimal age, divide the days since your last birthday by the days between that birthday and the next, then add the result to your completed years.

A year is a leap year when it divides by 4, except century years, which must divide by 400. 1900 was not a leap year and 2000 was.

Clamping a 29 February anniversary to 28 February is Calculator Answers’ own convention, adopted so the birthday and age tools always agree. No standards body mandates it, and legal treatment of leap day birthdays varies by jurisdiction.

Birth date traditions

Once a date of birth is entered, the results include a Birth traditions panel: the western zodiac sign, the Chinese zodiac animal and element, the birthstone, the birth flower, and the named generation. Each is a stated convention looked up from the date, presented the same way this page states its 29 February rule: as the convention it is, not as a claim about you.

  • Western zodiac signs are fixed calendar ranges. Dates within a day of a boundary are flagged, since printed tables disagree by a day either side. The element, ruling planet, description and traditionally paired signs describe the tradition’s own charts.
  • The Chinese zodiac year begins at Lunar New Year, not on 1 January. For births from 1980 to 2026 the exact new-year date is used, so a January birth is assigned to the previous lunar year when it should be. Outside that range the animal is keyed to the calendar year and the panel says so.
  • Birthstones follow the modern United States list and birth flowers the common United States convention. Both vary by country and by era.
  • Generation labels use the Pew Research Center boundaries through Generation Z; the Generation Alpha boundary is a common demographic convention rather than a Pew definition.

Frequently asked questions

Enter your date of birth and the calculator gives the next time your birthday comes round, the weekday it lands on, and how many days are left. If today is your birthday it says so and the countdown reads zero rather than skipping ahead to next year.

Your age written as a single number, such as 26.15 years. The whole part is your completed years. The fraction is how far you are through your current birthday year: days since your last birthday divided by the number of calendar days between that birthday and your next one. It is not days divided by 365 or 365.25, because your own birthday year is either 365 or 366 days long depending on where a leap day falls.

The same way as the fraction in decimal age. If 55 days have passed since your last birthday, and there are 365 calendar days in total between that birthday and the next one, you are 55 divided by 365, or 15.1%, of the way through. The remaining 310 days are what the countdown shows. The denominator is the whole birthday-to-birthday span, not the days still to come, and never an average year.

This calculator treats 28 February as your anniversary in a common year and 29 February in a leap year. That is the convention used across the site so the birthday and age tools never disagree, and it is applied to the countdown, the next ten birthdays, your decimal age, and your half birthday alike. It is a calculation convention rather than a legal rule, and jurisdictions differ on the point.

Six calendar months after a birthday, clamped to the last day of the month when the target month is shorter. Someone born on 31 August has a half birthday on 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year. Defining it as 182.5 days would drift against the calendar and land on a different date most years.

The About your birth date panel gives it, worked out from the date itself rather than looked up. It also gives the day number within your birth year, whether that year was a leap year, and the weekday your birthday has fallen on most often across the birthdays you have had so far.

Put the year into the Birthday in a specific year field and it returns the date, the weekday and the age you turn. The next ten birthdays are also listed with their weekdays, so the next couple of years are visible without typing anything.

The day, week and month counts panel gives the dates for 1,000 weeks, 10,000 days, 15,000 days, 20,000 days, 25,000 days and 500 months, each with its weekday and whether it has already passed. They are counted in whole calendar days from your date of birth.

No, and nothing that only asks for a date honestly can. An exact hour or second count needs your birth time and the time zone you were born in. Multiplying calendar days by 24 would look precise while being out by up to a day, so the calculator stops at whole calendar days.

Write your birth date with this year in place of your birth year. If that date has not passed, it is your next birthday and the age you turn is this year minus your birth year. If it has passed, use next year instead and add one. For the days remaining, count the whole months between the two dates and then the leftover days, remembering that months run from 28 to 31 days and that February has 29 in a leap year.

The Birth traditions panel gives it, with the symbol, the date range the convention uses, and the sign's traditional element and ruling planet. Western zodiac signs are fixed date ranges, so the calculator looks your date up rather than computing anything. Dates on a boundary are flagged, because printed tables can differ by a day either side.

The panel shows the animal and element for the lunar year your date falls in. For birth years from 1980 to 2026 the calculator uses the exact Lunar New Year date, so a January or early-February birth is correctly assigned to the previous lunar year when it falls before the new year. Outside that range it keys the animal to the calendar year and says so, since only January and early-February births are affected by the difference.

Both come from the month of your birth date. The birthstone follows the modern United States list (garnet for January through turquoise for December) and the flower follows the common United States convention, carnation through narcissus. Other countries and older lists differ; these are stated conventions, not universal facts.

They describe the tradition, not you. Astrology's charts traditionally group each sign with the other signs of its element and two further companion signs, and that is what the panel reports. It is a convention people enjoy, the same way a birthstone is; it is not a prediction, and this site does not present it as one.
