How the Days Until Easter are Calculated
To calculate the number of days until Easter, the calculator uses the standard Meeus/Jones/Butcher Gregorian algorithm:
- Calculate the lunar cycle metrics and equinox factors for the target year.
- Find the month (March or April) and day of the first Sunday following the Paschal Full Moon.
- Compute the time difference in milliseconds between that resolved Easter Sunday and the client's current local date.
Popular Easter Holiday Traditions
Easter is celebrated around the world with diverse religious and secular celebrations:
- Easter Eggs: Decorating boiled eggs or chocolate eggs. Historically, eggs represented new life and rebirth, symbols associated with the resurrection of Jesus.
- Easter Bunny: A folklore figure depicted as a rabbit who delivers baskets filled with colored eggs, candy, and toys to children on Easter Eve.
- Easter Egg Hunts: An outdoor activity where children search for hidden decorative or plastic eggs filled with treats.

Frequently asked questions
Easter is a moveable feast, meaning its date is not fixed on the calendar. Under Christian tradition established at the Council of Nicaea, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) occurring on or after the vernal equinox (March 21). Therefore, Easter can fall on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.
The date of Easter is calculated using a series of mathematical equations that determine the astronomical phases of the moon and the day of the week. Our live calculator uses the standard Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm to resolve the date of Easter Sunday dynamically for any year.
Palm Sunday is the Sunday immediately preceding Easter Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week. Good Friday is the Friday preceding Easter, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Divide the remaining days by 7 to determine the exact weeks left. For instance, if 35 days remain, it is exactly 5 weeks until Easter Sunday.
