How Many Steps in a Mile
Last updated: May 31, 2026
Written by Blake Boege
A steps-in-a-mile page estimates steps taken over a mile by dividing 63,360 inches (one mile) by stride length. Stride length correlates with height (estimated at 41.4% of height). On average, walking a mile takes between 2,000 and 2,400 steps, while running a mile takes about 1,400 steps.
Estimate the number of walking steps in a mile. Adjust the calculator for your height or custom stride length to convert steps to miles and vice versa.
Quick Answer
Calculate the estimated number of walking steps in a mile based on height or stride length (average of ~2,000 steps per mile).
How Many Steps in a Mile?
An average adult takes about 2,000 to 2,400 steps per mile walking.
This equates to approximately 10,000 steps for every 4.5 to 5 miles walked.
Distance from one heel print to the next
Estimated Stride Length: 30.0 inches
(At this stride, 1 Mile = 2,112 steps)
Steps & Distance Estimates by Height Table
| Height | Estimated Stride | Steps per Mile | Miles per 10k Steps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5'0" (60") | 24.8" | 2,551 | 3.92 mi |
| 5'3" (63") | 26.1" | 2,429 | 4.12 mi |
| 5'6" (66") | 27.3" | 2,319 | 4.31 mi |
| 5'9" (69") | 28.6" | 2,218 | 4.51 mi |
| 6'0" (72") | 29.8" | 2,126 | 4.70 mi |
| 6'3" (75") | 31.1" | 2,041 | 4.90 mi |
Examples
Average Adult (Walking)
~2,000 to ~2,400 steps
Average Adult (Running)
~1,400 steps
10,000 Steps (Walking)
~4.5 miles
How it works
The number of steps you take in a mile depends entirely on your stride length (the distance covered from the heel print of one foot to the heel print of the other).
The Math Formula
Steps per Mile = 63,360 inches ÷ Stride Length (in)
Since there are 63,360 inches in one mile, dividing this by your average stride length in inches yields the total steps per mile.
Stride Length and Height Relationships
An individual's natural walking stride length is strongly correlated with their height. Statistically, an adult's walking stride length is approximately 41.4% of their height.
This ratio can be used to estimate stride length:
How Smartwatches and Pedometers Track Steps
Modern fitness trackers, smartwatches, and smartphones contain a 3-axis accelerometer sensor. The sensor detects motion signatures that represent steps. Using software algorithms, these devices filter out miscellaneous movements (like waving your hand or typing) and count only forward steps.
To estimate distance traveled, these trackers multiply your step count by an estimated stride length (often calculated using your height entered in the setup profile). Entering a custom, measured stride length in your tracker settings improves distance accuracy.

Frequently asked questions
For the average adult walking, 5 miles equates to approximately 10,000 to 11,000 steps.
For most people, a target of 10,000 steps equates to about 4.5 to 5 miles, depending on individual stride length.
Taller individuals generally have longer leg lengths and wider natural strides. As a result, they take fewer steps to cover a mile compared to shorter individuals.
Yes. When running, your momentum increases and you push off the ground with more force, lengthening your stride. An average person takes about 2,000 steps per mile walking, but only 1,200 to 1,500 steps per mile running.
