The number of steps you take in a mile depends entirely on your stride length (the distance covered from the heel print of one foot to the heel print of the other).

The Math Formula

Steps per Mile = 63,360 inches ÷ Stride Length (in)

Since there are 63,360 inches in one mile, dividing this by your average stride length in inches yields the total steps per mile.

Stride Length and Height Relationships

An individual's natural walking stride length is strongly correlated with their height. Statistically, an adult's walking stride length is approximately 41.4% of their height.

This ratio can be used to estimate stride length:
