How Many Meters in a Mile

Last updated: May 31, 2026

Written by Blake Boege

A meters-in-a-mile page converts distances between imperial miles and metric meters. Under the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, the statute mile is defined as exactly 1,609.344 meters. The international nautical mile is defined as exactly 1,852 meters. Metric track miles are typically simplified to 1,500 or 1,600 meters.

How it works

The international agreement of 1959 defined the statute mile as exactly 1,609.344 meters:

1 Mile (mi) = 1,609.344 Meters (m)

Statute Mile vs. Nautical Mile vs. Metric Mile

The standard land mile, or statute mile, consists of 5,280 feet. In comparison, a nautical mile is based on the Earth's circumference and is equivalent to one minute of latitude (exactly 1,852 meters).

For running track races, runners often train for the "metric mile" (1,500m) or run the standard 1,600m event (four laps of a standard 400m track), which is extremely close to a true mile (just 9.34 meters short).

Frequently asked questions

There are exactly 804.672 meters in a half mile (1,609.344 ÷ 2).

In track and field sports, the 1,500-meter run is often referred to as the 'metric mile' because it is a standard Olympic distance, even though it is about 109 meters short of a true land mile.

A nautical mile, used in marine and air navigation, is defined internationally as exactly 1,852 meters. This is about 243 meters longer than a standard land (statute) mile.

One kilometer is equal to 1,000 meters. Since a mile is 1,609.344 meters, one kilometer is equal to approximately 0.62137 miles (1,000 ÷ 1,609.344).
