Steps to Miles Calculator
Enter a step count and either a custom stride length or your height (walking or running). The calculator returns miles, kilometers, and the stride length it used. An optional time estimate uses a pace in minutes per mile.
e.g. 10,000
Walking stride ≈ height × 0.413. · e.g. 68
Distance
4.43 mi
7.13 km · stride 28.08 in
Distance equals steps × stride length. Walking stride is roughly 0.413 times height; running stride is roughly 0.485 times height. Real stride varies with pace, terrain, and fatigue, so treat the result as an estimate.
Examples
10,000 steps · 68 in height · walking estimate
Stride 28 in · 4.43 mi (7.13 km)
5,000 steps · custom 30 in stride
2.37 mi (3.81 km)
15,000 steps · 178 cm height · walking estimate
Stride 73 cm · 6.78 mi (10.91 km)
8,000 steps · 30 in stride · 18 min/mi pace
3.79 mi · time ≈ 68 min
How it works
Total distance is just steps × stride. The trick is the stride length. You can enter your own measured stride, or have the calculator estimate it from height using common biomechanics factors.
Distance · distance = steps × stride_length
Walking stride · stride ≈ height × 0.413
Running stride · stride ≈ height × 0.485
Custom stride is the most accurate option if you have measured your gait on a flat surface.

Estimate only. Stride length varies with pace, terrain, footwear, and fatigue. For training distance, use a GPS watch or a known-distance route rather than a step-count conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Roughly 4 to 5 miles for most adults, depending on stride length. For a 5'8' adult walking, 10,000 steps is about 4.6 miles (7.4 km). A taller person walking briskly might cover 5 miles in the same step count; a shorter person at a casual pace might cover 4 miles.
Walking stride is approximately height × 0.413; running stride is approximately height × 0.485. These factors are based on biomechanics research (Fryar and similar studies). They are population averages, not exact. Your real stride varies with pace, fatigue, terrain, and individual gait.
Distance = steps × stride length. The calculator multiplies the step count by the chosen or estimated stride length (in inches), divides by 63,360 inches per mile, and also reports kilometers.
Walk in a straight line for 20 steps on a flat surface; measure the distance from start to end, then divide by 20. Or count steps over a known distance (a 100-meter track works well) and divide. Custom stride is the most accurate input for the calculator.
No, distance depends only on steps and stride length. Pace affects how long the walk takes. The optional time estimate uses the pace you provide to convert miles into minutes; if you only want distance, leave it off.
The classic 10,000-step target has limited research backing; recent studies show health benefits start to plateau around 7,500 to 9,000 steps per day for older adults and higher for younger adults. Any consistent step increase from a sedentary baseline tends to improve health markers.
