Age Difference Calculator
Last updated: May 31, 2026
Written by Blake Boege
An age difference calculator computes the exact chronological gap between the birth dates of two individuals. By entering two separate dates of birth, the calculator determines the difference in time, breaking it down into years, months, and days, as well as total days or weeks. Relationships, sibling comparisons, and historical timeline research utilize this calculation to define age intervals. The tool operates under standard calendar rules, accounting for varying month lengths and leap years to guarantee precision.
Enter two birth dates to find the exact age difference between two people — in years, months, and days. Use it for couples, siblings, parents and children, friends, celebrity comparisons, or any two people. The calculator also shows both people's current ages and provides cultural context around common age-gap guidelines.
Quick Answer
Calculate the exact age gap between two people. Enter two birth dates to see the difference in years, months, and days.
Defaults to today. Adjust to see ages at a past or future date.

Examples
Couple — typical age gap
32-year-old + 30-year-old = 2-year gap
Larger relationship gap
45-year-old + 30-year-old = 15-year gap
Sibling spacing
8-year-old + 5-year-old = 3-year, 2-month gap
Generational gap
65-year-old grandparent + 8-year-old grandchild = 57-year gap
How it works
The age difference calculator finds the exact time difference between two birth dates. It counts complete years first, then the remaining months, then the remaining days — the same way we calculate someone's age. The result tells you exactly how much older one person is than the other.
The calculator works in any direction: it doesn't matter which person you enter first. The output always shows the older person and the gap. By default, the calculation uses today's date as the reference point, but you can set it to any past or future date to see what the age difference will be then.
What this calculator does
Use this to compare ages between any two people: spouses, partners, siblings, parents and children, friends, coworkers, or even historical/celebrity figures. It's also useful for family planning ("How old will I be when my child turns 18?"), estate planning ("What's the age gap between my parents?"), and genealogy research.
How to use it
- Enter the first person's date of birth.
- Enter the second person's date of birth.
- Read the age difference in years, months, and days at the top.
- Optionally change the 'Calculate on date' to see the age gap at a past or future date — useful for projections.
- Scroll for cultural context including the 'half-your-age-plus-seven' guideline.
Worked example
Person 1: born May 10, 1985. Person 2: born March 22, 1990. Target date: May 25, 2026.
Difference calculation:
- From March 22, 1985 to March 22, 1990 = exactly 5 years
- Adjust for actual birth dates: Person 1 (May 10) is born about 7 weeks earlier in the year than Person 2 (March 22)
- Exact difference: 4 years, 10 months, 19 days
Person 1 is 4 years, 10 months, and 19 days older than Person 2.
On May 25, 2026:
- Person 1 is 41 years, 0 months, 15 days old
- Person 2 is 36 years, 2 months, 3 days old
Common age difference questions
Originating from a French expression in the 1800s and popularized in dating advice, this guideline suggests the youngest "appropriate" age for a partner is your age divided by two, plus seven. It is widely cited but is merely a social heuristic, not a moral rule.
While individuals born within 15-18 years of each other are typically placed in the same named generation (like Millennials or Gen Z), a gap of 20+ years usually signifies a parent-child generational distance. Gaps of 5-15 years place people in the same generation but often at distinctly different life stages.
Research shows the average heterosexual couple has a 2-3 year age gap (with the man typically older). However, successful relationships happen across all age gaps, provided both partners are consenting adults.
Common spacing for siblings is 2-4 years. When the gap exceeds 7 years, the family dynamics often shift, with the older sibling sometimes taking on a more parental or mentorship role.
Calculating an age gap before someone is born is incredibly useful for family planning. You can determine exactly how old you will be when a future child graduates high school, turns 18, or reaches other milestones.

Frequently asked questions
Subtract the older person's birth date from the younger person's birth date. The result is the age gap in years, months, and days. The calculator above does this automatically — just enter both birth dates.
A cultural guideline from 19th-century French advice columns suggesting the youngest 'appropriate' age for a romantic partner is your age divided by 2, plus 7. For a 30-year-old, that's 22. It's a rough social heuristic, not a moral or legal rule — many successful relationships fall outside this range, and the guideline only applies to adults (both people must be 18+ regardless).
Research shows the average heterosexual couple has a 2-3 year age gap, with the man typically older. Most committed long-term couples are within 5 years of each other. But 'normal' varies widely — relationships across all age gaps can be successful, provided both partners are adults and the relationship is built on mutual respect.
Use the calculator above with both siblings' birth dates. Sibling age gaps are typically measured in years and months. The most common spacing is 2-4 years; gaps under 18 months are called 'Irish twins'; gaps over 7 years often lead to different family dynamics (older sibling acts more parental).
Generally, a 20-year gap indicates a parent-child relationship spacing — often considered 'one generation apart.' Smaller gaps (5-15 years) are still the same generation but different life stages. The official US Census generation boundaries (Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X, etc.) span 15-18 years each.
Use the 'Calculate on date' field above and set it to any future date. The age gap in years, months, and days stays the same regardless of when you calculate it (the gap doesn't change as both people get older). However, both people's individual ages will be different.
Yes. Enter their birth dates and set the 'Calculate on date' to any date during their overlapping lifetimes. The calculator handles dates from 1900 onward by default — use the date picker to navigate to earlier years if needed.
Studies show relationship satisfaction doesn't strongly correlate with age gap once both partners are adults and the relationship is consensual and mutually respectful. Larger gaps (10+ years) can introduce practical challenges around life stage alignment, energy levels, and family planning timing, but many successful marriages have significant age gaps.
Use the calculator: enter both birth dates, and set the 'Calculate on date' field to the younger person's birth date. The result shows how old the older person was when the younger person was born.
Because both people age at the same rate. If Person A is 5 years older than Person B today, Person A will still be 5 years older next year, next decade, and forever. The age gap is a constant — only their individual ages change.
