What Is a Coefficient in Math?
A coefficient is the number that multiplies a variable. In 5x + 3 the coefficient is 5, because it is what x is being multiplied by. What is a coefficient in math?
A coefficient is the number that multiplies a variable. In 5x + 3 the coefficient is 5, because that is what x is being multiplied by.
The 3 is not a coefficient. It multiplies nothing, so it is a constant term. This is the distinction the whole word turns on: a coefficient is attached to something, and a constant stands alone.
Coefficient vs constant vs term
The four words that describe the parts of an algebraic expression are best learned together, because each is defined partly by the others. Take 5x + 3:

The two cases people miss
Most coefficients are read off without difficulty. Two are not, and between them they account for most of the errors.
- The invisible 1. x means 1x, so its coefficient is 1, not zero and not nothing. Likewise −x has coefficient −1. The 1 is left out by convention because writing it adds nothing, but it is there.
- The sign travels with the number. In 5x − 4y the coefficient of y is −4, not 4. Reading the subtraction as separate from the number is how sign errors get into every later line of working.
A quick check: rewrite every subtraction as an addition of a negative. 5x − 4y becomes 5x + (−4)y, and the coefficients read straight off.
The leading coefficient
When terms are ordered by descending power, the coefficient of the highest-power term gets its own name: the leading coefficient.
In 4x³ − 2x² + 7 the leading coefficient is 4. It matters more than the others because it decides what the graph does at the extremes: a positive leading coefficient on an odd-power polynomial sends the curve down on the left and up on the right, and a negative one flips that.
In a quadratic ax² + bx + c, the leading coefficient a decides whether the parabola opens upward or downward, and how narrow it is.
Coefficients and like terms
Coefficients are what you actually add when simplifying. Terms are like when their variable parts match exactly, and only then can they be combined.
3x + 5x = 8x works because both terms carry the same variable part, so the coefficients add and the x comes along unchanged. 3x + 5y does not simplify at all, because x and y are different things and there is nothing to collect.
Powers count as part of the variable: 3x and 5x² are not like terms either. The simplify calculator collects like terms and shows which coefficients were combined.
How to find the coefficient
Find the term containing the variable and read the number in front of it, sign included.
- 7y → coefficient 7
- −4ab → coefficient −4
- x → coefficient 1
- −x → coefficient −1
- 0.5x → coefficient 0.5
A reliable habit: rewrite every subtraction as an addition of a negative before reading anything off. 5x − 4y becomes 5x + (−4)y, and the coefficients are then unambiguous.
Common mistakes
- Saying x has no coefficient. It has one; the coefficient is 1.
- Leaving the minus sign behind. The sign is part of the coefficient.
- Calling the constant a coefficient. A coefficient multiplies a variable.
- Adding unlike terms. Coefficients combine only when the variable parts are identical, powers included.
