How it works

The live timer computes the differences between now and September 22 in local timezone milliseconds:

Countdown · Days = (September 22 - Today) / 86,400,000

How the Days Until Fall are Calculated

To calculate the number of days until the start of fall, find the difference in milliseconds between the equinox target date (September 22 at midnight) and the current local system date. Since the autumn equinox occurs annually, if September 22 of the current year has already passed, the calculation shifts to next year's September 22 date.

Target Date: September 22
Math: (Target Date Time − Current Time) in Milliseconds ÷ 1,000 ÷ 60 ÷ 60 ÷ 24 = Days Remaining

Astronomical vs. Meteorological Seasons

Seasons can be divided in two ways:

  • Astronomical Fall: Starts on the autumn equinox (September 21–23) and ends on the winter solstice (December 20–22). This is governed by the Earth's tilt relative to the sun.
  • Meteorological Fall: Defined by climatologists as the three transition months: September, October, and November. It begins on September 1 and ends on November 30.

Frequently asked questions

In the Northern Hemisphere, fall (autumn) starts on the autumn equinox, which typically falls on September 21, September 22, or September 23. For common calendar tracking, September 22 is widely used as the general start date.

The autumn equinox is the moment when the sun crosses the celestial equator from north to south. This marks the day of the year when daylight and night hours are nearly equal all over the world.

Divide the remaining days by 7 to determine the number of weeks. For example, if there are 70 days left, it is exactly 10 weeks until September 22.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed. Fall starts on the March equinox (approx. March 20), while September 22 marks the beginning of spring.
