Area Converter
Last updated: June 19, 2026
An area converter is a measurement utility that translates two-dimensional surface area values between different unit systems. The converter supports conversions between metric units (such as square millimeters, square centimeters, square meters, hectares, and square kilometers) and imperial units (such as square inches, square feet, square yards, acres, and square miles). It applies precise mathematical conversion factors to ensure accuracy. Real estate professionals, farmers, construction builders, and students use this tool to standardize land and surface measurements.
Pick a 'from' unit, a 'to' unit, and enter a value. The calculator returns the converted area plus equivalents in every supported unit.
Quick Answer
Convert surface area measurements between metric and imperial units. Enter your value and select units to calculate conversions across square feet, square meters, acres, and hectares.
Area cannot be negative. · e.g. 100
Internal base unit is the square meter. 1 acre = 43,560 ft² ≈ 4,046.86 m². 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.471 acres.
Square foot → Square meter
9.2903 m2
100 ft2 = 9.2903 m2
1 ft² ≈ 0.0929 m². 1 m² ≈ 10.764 ft². 1 acre = 43,560 ft². 1 hectare = 10,000 m² ≈ 2.471 acres.
Examples
1,000 ft² to m²
≈ 92.9 m²
1 acre to ft²
= 43,560 ft²
1 hectare to acres
≈ 2.471 acres
How it works
All units are stored as factors relative to the square meter. Convert through the square-meter base: value times source factor gives m², then divide by target factor.
Formula · output = value × factor(from) ÷ factor(to)
1 ft² ≈ 0.0929 m². 1 m² ≈ 10.764 ft². 1 acre = 43,560 ft² ≈ 4,046.86 m². 1 hectare = 10,000 m² ≈ 2.471 acres.

Frequently asked questions
An acre is a unit of area commonly used for land. 1 acre = 43,560 square feet ≈ 4,046.86 m² ≈ 0.4047 hectares. Historically it was the area a yoke of oxen could plow in a day. A standard American football field is about 1.32 acres.
A hectare is the metric unit for large areas, especially farmland. 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 100 m × 100 m = 2.471 acres. The hectare is the metric counterpart to the acre and is used in most countries outside the US.
Area is measured in squared units (sq m, sq ft, etc.) because it covers two dimensions. A meter measures length; a square meter measures the area of a 1m × 1m square. Doubling the side of a square quadruples its area, not doubles it.
Because the conversion factor is squared. 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = (0.3048)² m² = 0.0929 m². Squared units use squared conversion factors. The calculator handles this automatically.
Large areas: cities, counties, states, countries, lakes. 1 mi² ≈ 2.59 km². New York City is about 302 mi² (783 km²). Useful for geography, real estate at scale, and environmental data.
No, this is a unit converter. For area from length × width (rectangles, square footage of rooms), use the square footage calculator or the area calculator hub for other shapes.
