A triangular prism calculator is a geometry utility that computes the volume and surface area of a 3D prism with a triangular cross-section. The volume is calculated as the base area of the triangle (0.5 * base * height) multiplied by the length of the prism. If the remaining two side lengths of the triangular base are provided, the calculator determines the surface area by adding the areas of the two triangular bases and the three rectangular faces.

Calculate the volume and surface area of a triangular prism using base, height, length, and optional side inputs.

Quick Answer

Find the volume and surface area of a triangular prism. Enter the triangle base, height, and prism length to compute the volume. Optional side inputs compute surface area.

The base length of the triangular cross-section. · e.g. 6

The height of the triangular cross-section. · e.g. 4

The perpendicular length/depth of the prism. · e.g. 10

Used for surface area. · e.g. 5

Used for surface area. · e.g. 5

Volume only requires triangle base, height, and prism length. Enter both additional triangle sides (a and c) to also calculate surface area.

Examples

Basic Prism

base = 6 · height = 4 · length = 10 — Volume = 120 units³

Full Surface Area

base = 6 · height = 4 · length = 10 · side a = 5 · side c = 5 — Volume = 120 units³ · Surface Area = 184 units²

How it works

Volume Formula

The volume of a triangular prism represents the total 3D space contained inside the shape.

Volume = 0.5 × b × h × l

Where b is the base of the triangle, h is the height of the triangle, and l is the length of the prism.

Surface Area Formula

The surface area is the total area of all five outer faces combined (two triangles + three rectangles).

Surface Area = (b × h) + l × (a + b + c)

Where a, b, and c are the three side lengths of the triangular base.

Frequently asked questions

A triangular prism is a three-dimensional shape with two parallel triangular bases and three rectangular sides connecting them.

The volume is calculated by finding the area of the triangular base and multiplying it by the length of the prism. Formula: Volume = 0.5 × base × height × length.

The surface area is the sum of the areas of the two triangular bases plus the area of the three rectangular sides. Formula: Surface Area = (base × height) + length × (side a + base + side c).

A triangular prism has two parallel triangular bases connected by rectangular faces. A pyramid has a single base (which can be triangular, square, or rectangular) that tapers to a single point at the top (apex).
