Grass Seed Calculator
Pick new lawn, overseeding, or a custom rate. Enter your lawn area (or length and width), seed rate, and bag size. The calculator returns pounds of seed needed, whole bag count, and an optional cost estimate.
Project type
Typical: 4 to 6 lb per 1,000 sq ft for a fresh seeding.
Lawn dimensions
Use this if your lawn is not rectangular and you measured the total area separately.
Tips
- Always check the seed bag for the manufacturer's recommended rate for your seed type.
- Cool-season grasses (fescue, ryegrass, bluegrass) seed at different rates than warm-season grasses (Bermuda, zoysia).
- Overseeding works best in early fall (cool-season) or late spring (warm-season).
Educational estimate. Local climate, soil prep, and seed quality affect actual germination. Not landscaping or agronomic advice.
Seed needed
12.6 lb
Buy 1 bag to cover the area with waste.
Bag count is rounded up to the next whole bag. The cost shown is only as accurate as the price-per-bag you entered.
Examples
4,000 sq ft new lawn at 5 lb/1000
= 20 lb, 1 bag (20 lb)
10,000 sq ft new lawn at 5 lb/1000
= 50 lb, 3 bags (20 lb)
4,000 sq ft overseed at 3 lb/1000
= 12 lb, 1 bag (20 lb)
Custom 6,500 sq ft at 4 lb/1000
= 26 lb, 2 bags (20 lb)
How it works
Seed quantity is area-based. The standard reporting unit is pounds per 1,000 square feet. Multiply the lawn area (in 1,000s) by the rate to get the total seed weight.
Seed needed · lbs = (area / 1,000) x rate
Bags = ceil((lbs with waste) / bag size).

Frequently asked questions
Multiply your lawn area (in 1,000 sq ft units) by the seed rate (in pounds per 1,000 sq ft). For example, a 4,000 sq ft lawn at 5 lb per 1,000 needs 20 lb of seed. The calculator adds a small waste allowance and rounds up to whole bags.
For a new lawn: 4 to 6 pounds per 1,000 sq ft of most cool-season blends. For overseeding existing lawn: 2 to 4 pounds per 1,000 sq ft. Warm-season grasses (Bermuda, zoysia) often seed at lower rates by weight because the seeds are smaller; check the bag.
Yes. Look for the percentage of pure live seed (PLS), germination rate, and inert matter on the bag label. A bag with 90% PLS and 85% germination is much more effective than one with 70% PLS and 70% germination.
Cool-season grass seeds best in early fall, then early spring as a second choice. Warm-season grass seeds best in late spring and early summer when soil is consistently warm. Avoid mid-summer for cool-season and avoid cold weather for warm-season.
Measure the area by hand (break it into rectangles and add them up) and enter the total in the 'Area override' field. The calculator uses whatever total area you provide.
Only as precise as the price you enter. Local prices vary widely, and the estimate does not include shipping, taxes, or any soil amendments. Use it as a planning number, not a quote.
