Sand Calculator

Enter the area to cover and the depth, pick a sand density, and the calculator returns the volume in cubic feet and cubic yards, the weight in tons, the number of 50 lb bags, and an optional cost estimate from bag or per-ton pricing.

Notes

  • Densities are approximate. Real sand varies with moisture and grain shape; weight a sample if precision matters.
  • 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. 1 ton = 2,000 lb.
  • Bag delivery is convenient for small jobs (under 1 yard³). Bulk delivery wins on price for larger projects.

Educational estimate. Always confirm with the supplier's quoted density and yardage.

How it works

Sand quantity is a volume-and-density problem. The calculator computes the cubic-foot volume from your dimensions, multiplies by the chosen density, and converts to tons and bags.

Volume · V (ft³) = L x W x D

Weight · lbs = V x density (lb/ft³); tons = lbs / 2,000

1 yd³ = 27 ft³. Bag count is ceil(lbs / bag size).

Frequently asked questions

Multiply length, width, and depth in the same units to get volume. Convert to cubic yards by dividing cubic feet by 27. Multiply volume by sand density (in lb/ft³) to get weight; tons = pounds / 2,000.

Sand weight per unit volume varies. Dry sand is around 100 lb/ft³, wet sand around 120, masonry sand around 105. Picking the right preset makes the tonnage realistic, especially for bulk orders.

Bagged sand (typically 50 lb) is sold per bag and is convenient for small jobs. Bulk sand is sold per ton (or per cubic yard) and is much cheaper per pound for jobs over about 1 cubic yard. The calculator shows both costs if you enter both prices.

Play sand is washed and screened (smaller, more uniform grain) and is safer for kids. Masonry sand is finer for mortar mixes. Fill sand is coarser and used for base layers under pavers or concrete. Density is roughly similar; the differences are grain size and cleanliness.

Bag count is rounded up to the next whole bag. A job that needs 0.7 bags still requires buying one full bag. For larger jobs, buying bulk often costs much less per pound than buying bags.

No. The calculator is an educational estimate. Real-world density depends on moisture content and grain shape; ordering and delivery may use slightly different quotes. Confirm with the supplier.
