Asphalt Calculator

Enter the pavement length, width, and thickness, pick a density preset for hot-mix or cold-mix asphalt, and the calculator returns the tons of asphalt needed with a waste allowance and an optional cost per ton.

Asphalt density

Typical hot-mix paving asphalt: about 145 lb/ft³ (~2,320 kg/m³).

Assumptions

  • Asphalt is sold by the ton; the calculator returns tons after the waste allowance.
  • Hot-mix paving density of about 145 lb/ft³ is industry typical; verify with your supplier's mix.
  • Compaction reduces the laid thickness; many paving crews lay 25% thicker than the finished spec.
  • Driveways usually need a compacted aggregate base under the asphalt, not included here.

Educational estimate. Not a contractor quote, structural opinion, or grading/drainage plan. Always confirm quantities with the paving company.

Cost is tons with waste multiplied by the price per ton you entered. It does not include delivery, prep work, base aggregate, edging, or labor.

Examples

Driveway 40 x 12 ft x 3 in hot-mix

≈ 8.7 tons (with 5% waste)

Parking pad 20 x 20 ft x 3 in

≈ 7.3 tons (with 5% waste)

Small fix 10 x 4 ft x 2 in

≈ 0.5 tons

Walkway 50 x 4 ft x 2 in

≈ 2.4 tons

How it works

Asphalt quantity is a volume-and-density problem. The calculator multiplies the pavement volume by the chosen density, converts to tons, and applies a waste factor.

Volume · ft³ = L x W x thickness

Tons · tons = ft³ x density / 2,000

Hot-mix density ≈ 145 lb/ft³. Cold-mix patch ≈ 130 lb/ft³.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply length, width, and thickness (in feet) to get cubic feet of pavement, then multiply by the asphalt density (about 145 lb/ft³ for hot-mix) to get pounds. Tons are pounds divided by 2,000.

Residential driveways are typically 2 to 3 inches of asphalt over a compacted aggregate base. Heavy-use driveways and commercial lots use 4 inches or more. Always follow the paving contractor's spec for your soil and use.

Hot-mix asphalt arrives by truck, weighed at a scale. Pricing per ton makes the cost track the delivery exactly. The calculator converts your volume input to tons using the density preset.

Hot-mix asphalt for paving is around 145 lb/ft³. Cold-mix patch is lighter, around 130 lb/ft³. If your supplier quotes a specific mix density, use the Custom option and enter that value.

It calculates the volume of pavement at the final thickness. Many crews lay roughly 25 percent thicker before compaction; that detail is between you and the paving contractor and is not modeled here.

No. The calculator returns an educational estimate of material tons. It does not include the aggregate base course, prep work, grading, edging, labor, equipment, sealing, or permits. Always get a written quote from a licensed paving contractor for real work.
