Wallpaper Calculator

Enter the wall dimensions and how many walls you are papering. The calculator subtracts door and window areas, adjusts for the pattern repeat, applies a waste allowance, and rounds up to whole rolls.

Notes

  • Pattern repeat costs extra material because each strip has to start with the matching motif.
  • For large patterns, increase the waste allowance to 15 to 20 percent.
  • European single rolls are about half the area of US double rolls; double-check the bolt size.

Educational estimate. Always buy enough that all rolls share the same dye lot. Returns are easier than re-orders.

Roll count is rounded up to the next whole roll. The drop count per roll is the number of usable full-height strips, factoring in the pattern repeat.

Examples

12 ft wall x 8 ft x 4 walls, no repeat

≈ 8 rolls

Single accent wall 12 x 8 ft, no repeat

≈ 2 rolls

Large room 15 x 10 ft x 4 walls, 1 ft repeat

≈ 14 rolls

Small bathroom 8 ft x 8 ft x 4 walls

≈ 5 rolls

How it works

The calculation runs in two parts. First, total wall area minus door and window deductions, times a waste factor. Second, the usable area of one roll given the wall height plus pattern repeat. The ratio is the number of rolls.

Wall area · A = L x H x N − doors − windows

Roll coverage · drops x (width / 12) x height

drops = floor(roll length / (wall height + pattern repeat)).

Frequently asked questions

Take the total wall area, subtract doors and windows, multiply by a waste factor, then divide by the area one roll can cover. Roll coverage equals the number of full-height strips you can cut from a roll times the strip area.

If the wallpaper has a repeating motif, each strip has to start at the same place in the pattern. The unused material between strips is waste. Larger repeats mean fewer drops per roll and more rolls overall.

US double rolls (the common retail unit) are about 20.5 inches wide and 33 feet long, covering roughly 56 sq ft. European single rolls run about 20.5 inches by 33 feet but are sometimes packaged differently. Always check the label.

Start with 10 percent for a plain or non-repeating pattern. Use 15 to 20 percent for medium and large repeats, or for difficult room shapes with lots of cuts.

Yes. The calculator rounds up to whole rolls because manufacturers do not sell partial rolls. It is better to have a leftover than to come up short during installation, and the leftover can serve as backup if the wall is damaged later.

Mainly. You can also subtract any other large area you do not plan to cover (a built-in cabinet, a fireplace surround, etc.). For small obstructions (outlets, vents), keep the waste allowance and ignore them.
