Written by Blake Boege

A middle school GPA calculator is a grading utility designed to calculate an unweighted Grade Point Average on a standard 4.0 scale. It converts letter grades to numerical point values (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0) and averages them over total courses, supporting plus/minus grade modifiers.

Compute your middle school Grade Point Average (GPA). Enter your course grades using simple letter values or plus/minus options to calculate your unweighted 4.0 scale GPA.

Quick Answer

GPA: 3.40 (using plus/minus scales)

How it works

The Grade Point Average represents the mathematical mean of your course grade values on a standard 4.0 scale:

Standard Grade Point Conversion:

A = 4.0 · B = 3.0 · C = 2.0 · D = 1.0 · F = 0.0

Plus/Minus Adjustment Scales:

(+) adds 0.3 (except A+ remains 4.0 in most systems)
(−) subtracts 0.3

GPA Formula:

GPA = Sum of Grade Points ÷ Number of Courses

Frequently asked questions

It is calculated by converting each letter grade into its standard numerical equivalent (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), adding these points together, and then dividing the total points by the number of classes.

No. Unlike high school, middle schools rarely offer honors, AP (Advanced Placement), or IB (International Baccalaureate) courses that carry weighted grade points (e.g. 5.0 for an A). All classes in middle school are unweighted, meaning the maximum possible GPA is 4.0.

Generally, no. Middle school grades do not affect your high school GPA or college applications. However, some high school level classes taken in middle school (like Algebra I or Biology) may appear on high school transcripts, though policies vary by district.

It depends on your middle school's grading policy. Some schools use simple letter grades (A, B, C, etc.), while others use a plus/minus scale (e.g. A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3). This calculator supports both options.
