Circle Skirt Calculator

Written by Blake Boege

A circle skirt calculator is a sewing drafting utility used to calculate pattern layout dimensions and fabric requirements for flared skirts. It determines the correct waist cutout radius based on waist circumference and skirt style (full, half, or quarter circle), estimates the total pattern radius, and projects the minimum fabric yardage needed.

Design your custom circle skirt. Select your skirt type, enter your waist circumference and skirt length, and calculate the exact waist radius to cut and the minimum fabric yardage needed.

Quick Answer

Calculate the waist cutout radius and total fabric yardage required to sew full, half, or quarter circle skirts from standard fabric rolls.

Pattern Metrics

inches

Measure where you want the waistband to sit.

From waistband to desired hemline.

Common widths: 45 or 60 inches (115 or 150 cm).

Pattern Layout Draft

Minimum fabric required

1.39 yards

Waist cutout radius: 4.46 inches

Waist cutout radius4.456 inches
Total pattern piece radius24.956 inches
Hem allowance included0.5 inches
Min. fabric length needed49.9 inches

Note: We recommend buying an extra 0.25 to 0.5 yards (or meters) of fabric to account for pattern matching, pre-washing shrinkage, and layout adjustments.

Examples

28 in waist, 20 in length, Full skirt, 60 in fabric

Waist Radius: 4.46 in, Fabric Needed: 1.39 yards

70 cm waist, 50 cm length, Half skirt, 150 cm fabric

Waist Radius: 22.28 cm, Fabric Needed: 1.45 meters

How it works

The waist cutout radius is determined by rearranging the circle circumference formula. The total pattern radius determines the layout size, which is compared against the fabric width:

Waist Cutout Radius:

Full Skirt Radius = Waist ÷ (2 × π)

Half Skirt Radius = Waist ÷ π

Quarter Skirt Radius = Waist ÷ (0.5 × π)

Total Pattern Radius:

Pattern Radius = Waist Radius + Skirt Length + Hem Allowance

Frequently asked questions

A circle skirt is a skirt cut in a circular shape from fabric, resulting in a very flowy, flared skirt without gathers or pleats at the waist. It is made by cutting a center circular opening for the waist and a larger outer circle for the hem.

Common styles include: Full Circle (creates a full 360-degree circle when laid flat), Half Circle (180 degrees, less voluminous), and Quarter Circle (90 degrees, more of an A-line shape).

For a full circle skirt, the waist opening represents the full circumference of a circle. For a half circle skirt, the waist opening represents a semicircle, meaning the waist radius must be twice as large to yield the same circumference when laid flat.

The calculator estimates the minimum fabric required based on dimensions. Always buy an extra 0.25 to 0.5 yards/meters to account for pattern matching, fabric shrinkage after washing, and potential cutting mistakes.
