A speed converter is a measurement utility that translates velocity values between different unit systems. The converter supports conversions between metric speed units (including meters per second and kilometers per hour) and imperial speed units (including miles per hour, feet per second, and knots). It applies standard physical conversion factors to ensure accuracy. Students, physicists, pilots, runners, and international drivers use this tool to standardize velocity measurements across different vehicles, industries, and countries.

Pick a 'from' unit, a 'to' unit, and enter a speed. The calculator returns the converted speed plus equivalents in every supported unit.

Quick Answer

Convert velocity and speed values between metric and imperial systems. Enter the speed value and select units for instant conversions across miles per hour, kilometers per hour, and knots.

Speed in your chosen unit. · e.g. 60

Internal base is meters per second. 1 mph = 1.609 km/h. 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1.852 km/h.

Speed

Miles per hour → Kilometers per hour

96.56064 kph

60 mph = 96.56064 kph

Meters per second (m/s)26.8224 mps
Kilometers per hour (km/h)96.56064 kph
Miles per hour (mph)60 mph
Feet per second (ft/s)88 fps
Knot (kn)52.13862 knot

1 mph ≈ 1.609 km/h ≈ 0.447 m/s. 1 knot ≈ 1.852 km/h ≈ 1.151 mph. 1 ft/s ≈ 0.682 mph.

Examples

60 mph to km/h

≈ 96.56 km/h

100 km/h to mph

≈ 62.14 mph

10 m/s to mph

≈ 22.37 mph

How it works

All units are stored as factors relative to meters per second. Convert through the m/s base: value times source factor gives m/s, then divide by target factor.

Formula · output = value × factor(from) ÷ factor(to)

1 km/h = 1/3.6 m/s. 1 mph ≈ 0.447 m/s. 1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s. 1 knot ≈ 0.5144 m/s.

Frequently asked questions

km/h = mph × 1.609344. So 60 mph ≈ 96.56 km/h. The inverse: mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344. The 1.609 factor comes from miles to kilometers: 1 mile = 1.609344 km.

A knot equals one nautical mile per hour, or about 1.151 mph (1.852 km/h). Knots are used in aviation and marine navigation. The term comes from rope knots on a log line, an old method for measuring a ship's speed.

Divide m/s by 1000 to get km per second, then multiply by 3600 to get km per hour: 1 m/s × 3600 ÷ 1000 = 3.6 km/h. So 10 m/s = 36 km/h. The 3.6 factor is a common quick-conversion shortcut.

Casual jogging is around 8 km/h (5 mph). A 10-minute mile pace is 6 mph (9.66 km/h). World record marathon pace is around 21 km/h (13 mph). Walking pace is typically 5 km/h (3.1 mph).

Yes, but speed is usually a scalar (always positive). Negative values would represent motion in the opposite direction along an axis (signed velocity). The math works either way.
