How it works
The hourly equivalent of a salary is the annual amount divided by the total hours worked in a year. The per-pay-schedule numbers come from fixed denominators (52, 26, 24, 12) so they always sum to the annual total.

Gross pay vs take-home pay
This calculator handles gross pay only. Gross pay is the dollar amount before any taxes or deductions. Take-home pay (also called net pay) is what actually lands in the bank account after federal income tax, state and local taxes, Social Security and Medicare, health insurance premiums, retirement contributions, and other deductions are taken out.
The difference between gross and net pay varies a lot by income, location, family situation, and benefit elections. For a take-home estimate, use the paycheck calculator instead. It is built for taxes, deductions, and net pay by pay frequency.
Standard vs working-hours hourly rate
The two hourly numbers answer different questions:
- Standard hourly rate spreads the salary across every week of the year, including paid time off. This is the number to use when comparing offers, since paid time off is part of the compensation.
- Working-hours hourly rate spreads the salary across only the weeks you actually work, which gives a slightly higher per-hour number that reflects the rate paid for hours on the job.
Pick the one that matches the question you are asking. For a salary versus contract-hourly comparison, the standard rate is usually more honest. For a sense of what each working hour is actually worth, the working-hours rate is more direct.
Pay-schedule conversions
- Weekly: annual ÷ 52. A $60,000 salary is about $1,153.85 per week.

Biweekly and semi-monthly are easy to confuse. Biweekly pays every 14 days (26 paychecks per year); semi-monthly pays twice a month (24 paychecks per year). The per-paycheck dollar amount and the timing both differ, even when the annualized number is the same.

Common mistakes
- Comparing a salary's hourly equivalent to a contract hourly rate without adjusting for benefits. A $30/hour W-2 salary includes employer-provided benefits; a $30/hour 1099 contract does not.
- Treating biweekly and semi-monthly as the same. They produce different per-paycheck amounts and different paycheck timing.
- Forgetting to enter your actual hours per week. The hourly rate depends on the denominator, and a 50 hr/week salaried role has a lower hourly equivalent than a 40 hr/week role at the same annual.
- Using the calculator to estimate take-home pay. This tool handles gross pay only; taxes and deductions go to a different calculator.
- Forgetting that paid time off is part of the compensation. The standard hourly equivalent already includes PTO; the working-hours rate just isolates the per-working-hour view.

Divide the annual salary by the total hours worked in a year. The basic formula is hourly rate = annual salary / (hours per week × weeks per year). At a standard 40 hours per week for 52 weeks, that is 2,080 total hours per year, so a $60,000 salary works out to about $28.85 per hour.
Using the full year of 52 weeks at the chosen hours per week. This is the answer most people mean by 'salary to hourly' and is the default calculation. At 40 hours per week, the denominator is 2,080 hours per year.
