How it works

The calculator annualizes gross pay, subtracts pre-tax deductions and the federal standard deduction, applies 2025 federal brackets and FICA, and adds an Ohio state tax based on the rate you provide.

Federal taxable · annual_gross − pre_tax − standard_deduction

Ohio tax · (annual_gross − pre_tax) × state_rate

Net pay · gross − pre_tax − federal − FICA − OH − post_tax

Frequently asked questions

Ohio levies a state income tax with progressive brackets. The bottom brackets phase out at lower incomes and the top rate has settled around 3.5% in recent years. Local cities and school districts can also impose their own income taxes (often 1% to 2.5%) that this calculator does not model.

Ohio brackets change frequently and individual filers pay different effective rates depending on income. Rather than guess your bracket, the calculator uses a single editable Ohio rate so you can match it to your specific situation (or a typical effective rate for your income).

Annualize gross pay, subtract pre-tax deductions and the federal standard deduction, apply 2025 federal brackets, add Social Security and Medicare, then apply the Ohio rate against gross minus pre-tax deductions. Subtract post-tax deductions to get net pay.

Many Ohio municipalities (Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, etc.) and some school districts impose their own income taxes, typically 1% to 2.5%. This calculator does not model them. If you live or work in a city that withholds local tax, increase the state rate to include it, or subtract it from the net pay number.

Generally yes, since they reduce federal AGI and Ohio piggy-backs on federal AGI as a starting point. The calculator subtracts pre-tax deductions from gross before applying both federal and Ohio state taxes.
