How it works
The calculator annualizes gross pay, subtracts pre-tax deductions and the federal standard deduction, applies 2025 federal brackets and FICA, and adds the Illinois flat-rate state income tax.
Federal taxable · annual_gross − pre_tax − standard_deduction
FICA · 6.2% SS (up to wage base) + 1.45% Medicare (+0.9% high earner)
Illinois tax · (annual_gross − pre_tax) × state_rate
Net pay · gross − pre_tax − federal − FICA − IL − post_tax

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Illinois has a flat individual income tax, 4.95% as of 2025. There are no progressive brackets; everyone pays the same percentage on Illinois taxable income (with some exemptions and credits). The rate is editable in the calculator in case it changes.
Annualize your gross pay, subtract pre-tax deductions and the federal standard deduction for your filing status, apply the 2025 federal income-tax brackets, and add Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) plus Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% above the high-earner threshold). Then apply the Illinois flat rate to gross minus pre-tax. The remainder, minus post-tax deductions, is net pay.
Illinois allows a personal exemption (a small flat amount, increased for dependents) that reduces Illinois taxable income before the flat rate is applied. This calculator does not model the personal exemption to keep the math simple; for an exact W-4-style estimate, subtract the current personal exemption from gross before applying the state rate.
Real paychecks use the IRS percentage method against your W-4 and the Illinois IL-W-4 form, plus any additional withholding, credits, employer benefit plans, and the exact period. This calculator uses 2025 federal brackets and the federal standard deduction for a planning estimate.
Pre-tax 401(k) reduces federal taxable wages. For Illinois state purposes, traditional 401(k) contributions are also typically subtracted from state taxable wages (since they reduce federal AGI). Enter your pre-tax deduction per paycheck and the calculator subtracts it from gross before applying both federal and state taxes.
