Bible Verses About Healing

The Bible speaks honestly about sickness and grief and points to God as the source of all healing, ultimate and immediate. Below are curated KJV passages on God as healer, comfort in suffering, prayer and faith, and hope and restoration.

God as healer

One of God's names in the Old Testament is YHWH-Rapha, "the LORD that healeth thee" (Exodus 15:26). Healing is a recurring divine activity throughout the Bible.

...for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

Exodus 15:26 · KJV

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

Psalm 103:2-3 · KJV

Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.

Jeremiah 17:14 · KJV

Comfort in suffering

Healing in the Bible is not only physical. It is also the comfort God gives to those who are crushed and grieving.

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 34:18 · KJV

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

Psalm 147:3 · KJV

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 · KJV

Prayer and faith

The New Testament instructs the church to pray for the sick and entrusts the outcome to God.

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

James 5:14-15 · KJV

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Mark 11:24 · KJV

And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.

Matthew 8:13 · KJV

Hope and restoration

The Bible sets every present hardship against the final resurrection, when God will wipe away every tear and undo every disease.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:5 · KJV

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

1 Peter 2:24 · KJV

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Revelation 21:4 · KJV

How it works

The page groups verses into four themes that follow the biblical pattern around sickness and recovery:

  • God as healer: the source of all genuine healing, physical and spiritual.
  • Comfort in suffering: presence with the brokenhearted.
  • Prayer and faith: the church praying for the sick.
  • Hope and restoration: full healing in the resurrection.

Not medical advice. Bible verses can encourage faith and shape how a person walks through illness, but they do not replace medical care. Seek qualified medical attention for physical or mental health concerns. Pray and trust God alongside, not instead of, appropriate care.

Frequently asked questions

The Bible promises that God is the ultimate healer (Exodus 15:26, Psalm 103:3), that Christ bore our sicknesses (Isaiah 53:4-5, Matthew 8:17), and that complete healing is part of the believer's hope in the resurrection (Revelation 21:4). Whether physical healing comes in this life depends on God's wise providence. Many faithful believers experience healing now; others endure illness with grace. Both pictures appear in Scripture.

Isaiah 53:5 says of the suffering servant: 'But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.' The primary reference is to salvation from sin (1 Peter 2:24 quotes it that way). Many Christians also pray for physical healing on the basis of this verse, recognizing that the ultimate healing of body and soul is secured by the cross.

No. Bible verses can encourage faith, comfort grief, and shape how a person walks through illness, but they do not replace medical care. Seek qualified medical attention for physical or mental health concerns. Pray and trust God alongside, not instead of, appropriate care.

The Bible does not give a complete theology of why some are healed in this life and others are not. It does affirm that God is sovereign, wise, and good; that suffering can shape character (Romans 5:3-5); and that physical healing is fully realized in the resurrection. Where the present is uncertain, the future is sure.
