Bible Verses About Faith

Faith in the Bible is trust in God grounded in his character and promises. These curated KJV passages cover faith in God's nature, faith and salvation, faith during trial, and the daily life of walking by faith.

Faith in God

The classical definition of faith is in Hebrews 11. It is trust in what God has promised, in advance of seeing it fulfilled.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1 · KJV

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 · KJV

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6 · KJV

Faith and salvation

Faith is the instrument by which the gospel is received. The New Testament repeatedly contrasts faith with works as the ground of salvation.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 · KJV

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Romans 1:17 · KJV

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:9-10 · KJV

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:17 · KJV

Faith during trials

The Bible treats trial as the testing of faith. The New Testament does not promise an easy road; it promises that the tested faith is the proven one.

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

James 1:2-3 · KJV

Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

1 Peter 1:6-7 · KJV

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Romans 5:3-5 · KJV

Living by faith

Faith is not just for moments of crisis. The whole Christian life is lived by faith.

(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

2 Corinthians 5:7 · KJV

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20 · KJV

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Hebrews 10:38 · KJV

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

James 2:17 · KJV

How it works

The page groups verses into four themes that map how Scripture treats faith:

  • Faith in God: what faith is and who is trusted.
  • Faith and salvation: faith as the instrument through which the gospel is received.
  • Faith during trials: faith tested by hardship and refined.
  • Living by faith: the daily life of walking by faith, not sight.

Frequently asked questions

Hebrews 11:1: 'Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' The whole eleventh chapter of Hebrews is sometimes called the 'hall of faith' for its catalog of Old Testament figures whose lives were marked by faith in God's promises.

Hebrews 11:1 gives the classical definition: faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. It is confidence in God's promises and trust in his character, especially where the present circumstances do not yet match what God has promised.

James 2:17 says, 'Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.' Paul (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 4) and James (James 2) appear at first glance to disagree, but the classic Christian reading is that they address different questions. Paul argues that salvation is received by faith, not earned by works. James argues that genuine faith always produces works as fruit. Both affirm that real faith and real works belong together.

Romans 10:17 says, 'So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' Faith is awakened and nourished by encountering God's promises in Scripture. It is not generated by force of will but received as the Word of God is heard and believed.

Yes. Jesus told his disciples (Matthew 17:20) that faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. The point is not the volume of faith but the object: faith in the living God is powerful because of who God is, not because of the strength of the believer's emotion.
