Frequently asked questions
No. Washington is one of the U.S. states with no individual income tax. Your paycheck still has federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare withheld, plus state payroll programs like Paid Family and Medical Leave and the WA Cares long-term care premium.
Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave is a state-administered insurance program that provides paid time off for family and medical reasons. Workers pay a small premium each paycheck (the rate is updated yearly and often runs around 0.4 to 0.7% of gross wages). The calculator lets you enter your employee share if you want it modeled.
WA Cares is a state long-term care insurance program funded through a payroll deduction. The premium has changed over time and there are eligibility nuances. It is not modeled in this calculator; if it applies to your paycheck, factor it in separately or include it in the PFML field as a combined Washington payroll share.
Annualize gross pay, subtract pre-tax deductions and the federal standard deduction, apply 2025 federal brackets and FICA, optionally add a WA PFML premium, and subtract post-tax deductions. State income tax is always $0.
