## Quick Answer

mg measures mass and mL measures volume, so they do not convert directly. Supply the concentration and the arithmetic is one step: 500 mg at 250 mg/mL is 2 mL, and the same 500 mg at 100 mg/mL is 5 mL.

## Definition

Milligrams and millilitres measure different kinds of quantity, a mass and a volume, so no factor relates one to the other. What relates them for a liquid is mass concentration, the mass of a constituent divided by the volume of the mixture, which the SI lists as a derived quantity in its own right. Dividing a mass by a concentration gives the volume that holds it, and multiplying a volume by a concentration gives the mass it contains. Mass concentration is not the same thing as density, which is the mass of a substance divided by the volume of that same substance.

## How to Use

1. **Choose a direction** — mg to mL converts an amount into a volume. mL to mg does the reverse.
2. **Enter the amount or volume** — Micrograms, milligrams and grams are accepted for the amount; millilitres and litres for the volume.
3. **Enter the concentration from the product** — mg/mL, mcg/mL, g/L and percent w/v are all accepted and normalised to mg/mL before the arithmetic.
4. **Read the result** — The panel shows the answer and the division or multiplication it came from. It does not suggest an amount to take.
