## Quick Answer

Find the average (arithmetic mean) of a set of numbers: add them up and divide by how many there are. Paste your numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines and the calculator shows the mean with its sum, count and working.

## Definition

An average calculator computes the arithmetic mean of a dataset by summing every value and dividing by the count of values. The arithmetic mean is the most common measure of central tendency for numeric data, and it is reported alongside the median and mode because the three answer different questions: the mean uses every value and so responds to outliers, the median reports the middle value and so resists them, and the mode reports the value that occurs most often.

## How to Use

1. **Enter your numbers** — Type or paste a list of numbers separated by commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines. Decimals and scientific notation are accepted, and a zero counts as a value.
2. **Choose standard or weighted** — Standard mode reports the arithmetic mean. Weighted mode asks for one weight per value and reports the weighted mean instead. Weights are relative, so they do not need to total 1 or 100.
3. **Read the result and its working** — View the mean with its sum, count and substituted formula, plus the median, mode, range, minimum and maximum. The geometric and harmonic means are shown when every value is positive, and explain why they are unavailable when they are not.
